The overarching aim of the Xiqu Center of Taiwan is to popularize all kinds of traditional performing arts, as well as to provide an important place for high quality experiences of the arts. A series of activities will be held in various parts of the center, such as the outdoor plaza, the traditional opera platform, and the basement of the Taiwan Music Institute. These activities include: A Glimpse into the Traditional Opera Wardrobe for Foreigners; Glove Puppet Workshop for Parents and Children; A Night of Traditional Opera Movies; Let’s Sing Taiwanese Opera Together; The Painted Faces of the Monkey King; Fair of Traditional Taiwanese Toys; Pastimes of the Old Days: An Exhibition on the Guqin, the Game of Go, Chinese Calligraphy, and Chinese Paintings; and Martial Arts in Traditional Opera. The center welcomes people of all ages and nationalities, art enthusiasts of all types, and residents from the local community to come and enjoy a truly immersive traditional opera experience.
Art is powerful! with beauty giving it strength. Yet some people believe that beauty is subjective, and difficult to define or explain. As such, a good guide or mentor with penetrating insights can plant the seeds of appreciation in people’s hearts. Just as the sun and water help seeds germinate, so too do these lectures nurture an appreciation of beauty. Attendees learn about the diversity of arts and culture through introductions to a variety of art forms, and come away with a sense of the warmth and aesthetic qualities of the various creations.
As a cradle for traditional opera, the Xiqu Center of Taiwan exists in large part to cultivate performing artists and other theater professionals. Drawing on the resources at its disposal, including resident performing groups, promising young talents from a range of different artistic backgrounds are selected to take part in workshops, internships at theatrical troupes and musical groups, master classes, and internships at private businesses. Through long-term training and in conjunction with other programs, the center is constantly looking to find the best ways to develop the talent of the future, so as to ensure its ability to keep creating new works. The large-scale productions that the center is to host will also serve to boost the level of expertise and professionalism, which will in turn mean better quality technical support.
